Case Study:

Helping to Reframe and Prioritise the Management of Chronic Insomnia in UK Primary Care

The Client

Our client is dedicated to developing innovative small-molecule medicines for psychiatric/ sleep-related conditions.

Background

Chronic insomnia is a prevalent but under-recognised sleep disorder in the UK, affecting 6.8%–14.9% of adults. It is associated with significant health and economic burdens, yet remains under-diagnosed and poorly managed in primary care.

Opportunity

There was an opportunity to address key gaps in the understanding, diagnosis and management of chronic insomnia and to develop consensus-based recommendations to optimise care pathways across the National Health Service.

Approach

Triducive designed a Delphi approach to engage general practitioners, pharmacists, and sleep specialists.

Our Process

Step 1

A multi-disciplinary group with UK experts in chronic insomnia was facilitated to discuss the burden of chronic insomnia, the optimal role of community care services, treatment strategies, value of education, and optimal future roles for policies. They created a set of 39 statements to be tested across a wider audience.

Step 2

A structured online survey was created and disseminated across a larger base of experts. The online survey tested the strength of agreement that existed in relation to the statements developed by the steering group.

Step 3

The steering group reviewed the survey results and agreed on 5 recommendations to improve the management of chronic insomnia within UK healthcare.

Step 4

A manuscript capable of peer-reviewed publication was developed and authored by the steering group. Triducive supported submission to the BMJ.
